Griffin: The legendary creature that “lived” at Knossos Palace and is the symbol of Heraklion municipality for the last 60 years
Griffin: We have seen frescoes at the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion, in frescoes at the Knossos Palace but also as a symbol of Heraklion’s Municipality.
This legendary creature is represented with the body and legs of a lion, head and wings of an eagle. Sometimes it would have a snake’s tale.
It was considered to be a very powerful and majestic creature and in Minoan Crete it would symbolize the royal power.
As today, 22nd of March 1961 – this symbol was selected (among 20 different proposals) to represent Heraklion’s Municipality.

From the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion:
The fresco of high-relief Griffins tethered to columns decorated the “Great East Hall” of the palace of Knossos. The decoration of the hall also included religious emblems and representations in relief or boxing and bull-leaping games. According to Arthur Evans, this hall, located next to the “Grand Staircase” was used for official ceremonies by the palace rulers, Knossos, Palace, Neopalatial period (1600-1450 BC)

Γρύπας: Το μυθικό ον που “έζησε” στην Κνωσό και τα τελευταία 60 χρόνια σύμβολο του Δήμου Ηρακλείου.
Τους έχουμε δει στο Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο Ηρακλείου, σε τοιχογραφίες στο ανάκτορο της Κνωσού, αλλά και σαν έμβλημα του Δήμου Ηρακλείου.
Είναι ο Γρύπας, ένα μυθικό ον που είναι γνωστό σε εμάς από την Ελληνική μυθολογία με πιθανή προέλευση τη Μεσοποταμία.
Είχε σώμα λιονταριού, κεφάλι και φτερά αετού και ορισμένες φορές η απεικόνισή του ήταν με ουρά φιδιού.
Στη Μινωική Κρήτη ο γρύπας συμβόλιζε τη βασιλική ισχύ και παντοδυναμία.
Μάλιστα, σαν σήμερα, 22 Μαρτίου 1961 – το σύμβολο του Γρύπα αποφασίστηκε να δεσπόζει σαν νέο σήμα της πόλης του Ηρακλείου, μετά από εξέταση 20 σχεδίων.

Οι ανάγλυφοι Γρύπες δεμένοι σε κίονες άνηκαν στον τοιχογραφικό διάκοσμο της “Μεγάλης Ανατολικής Αίθουσας” του ανακτόρου της Κνωσού, ο οποίος περιλάμβανε επίσης θρησκευτικά σύμβολα και ανάγλυφες παραστάσεις αθλημάτων πυγμαχίας και ταυροκαθαρψίων. Η αίθουσα, σύμφωνα με τον Α. Evans, βρισκόταν δίπλα στο χώρο του “Μεγάλου Κλιμακοστασίου” και στέγαζε τις επίσημες εκδηλώσεις των ηγεμόνων του ανακτόρου. Κνωσός, Ανάκτορο, Νεοανακτορική περίοδος (1600-1450 π.χ.)
