The Monastery of St. Peter and St. Paul – A 12th century temple
The Church of Saints Peter & Paul, built during the early years of Venetian Domination.
This used to be the main temple of the Monastery of the Dominicans. Located between the Venetian Harbor and the Dermatas Gate (more about it in the near future), it used to host burials of Heraklion’s leaders.
It was turned into a mosque during the Ottoman Rule.
Unfortunately extensive damage was caused in the past centuries, due to earthquakes that the island suffered.
Restoration works have managed to recreate some parts of the temple and it hosts people on its name day celebration!
Congratulation!
